Essential tools to start knitting with beads

We're only a few days away from our bead knitting LIVE workshop.

We’re only a few days away from our bead knitting LIVE workshop.

But knitting with beads requires some very specific tools (not just beads 🙄).

So today we’re going to go over everything you need to get started, whether you’re joining us LIVE or not!

  • Seed Beads

These types of beads are usually round (although there are many shapes), with a round hole in the center, and flat sides where the hole is. They come in a range of sizes such as 5/0, 6/0, 8/0, 10/0, etc. The number generally refers to the number of beads that fit in a row within one inch. So size 5/0 beads are bigger than 8/0. The most common size is 6/0 which will fit on DK weight yarn or lighter. You can find these types of beads made from plastic, ceramic, or glass.

  • Small Crochet Hook

One method of getting bead onto your yarn for knitting is with a crochet hook. You'll need one with a hook size small enough to fit inside your beads. It's not the fastest method but it does give you a lot of control

  • Beading Needle

These long needles make it easier to string a lot of beads onto your yarn. This method is considerably faster but might take more planning. If you're going to be working with a lot of beads this might be the way to go.

  • Bead Spinner

This little bowl works with the beading needle to easily get beads on the needle. You dump a bunch of beads inside, twist it around, and the beads magically line themselves up. If you're knitting with a bunch of the same color beads for your project, this might be a good idea.

Knit One, Bead Too by Judith Durant

Once you have your materials you’re going to need some patterns to knit. Sadly most books on bead knitting are out of print. This one however has 16 great projects to help get you started.

If you’ve ever considered bead knitting you’ll need most of these tools.

But maybe you already knit with beads and have some other suggestions for a future round up.
