What is a Latvian braid?

Arbotante by Fran López
Arbotante by Fran López (via PDXKnitterati)

During one of our previous Colorwork Knitting Weekends, many people were blown away by the Latvian braid.

The technique is often found as a design detail on Latvian mittens and hats, but it can be applied to any project.

It uses a clever combination of twisting yarns to create a horizontal *braid* that looks like arrows pointing left or right (depending on how it’s made).

Erika at Don’t Be Such A Square does a great job of explaining how this delightful decoration can be added to your knitting.
