5 Barbie Inspired Knitting Patterns

Today the long anticipated Barbie movie is hitting theaters, starring Margo Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken.

Surprisingly, Barbie has a long history with knitting, from her iconic original knitted bathing suit to multiple branded knitting looms.

For more than 60 years little girls, their mother, and grandmothers have also been knitting clothes for their Barbie dolls.

So in honor of this pop culture phenomenon and this weekend’s film here are a few Barbie inspired patterns…

Wavy Gravy Cowl by Caitlyn Turowski

Why it’s totally awesome: This chevron cowl has a striking resemblance to that classic Barbie swimsuit worn by the first doll in 1959.

Barbie Doll Mermaid Tail by Angie Hartley

Why it’s far out: While you can get a Barbie mermaid doll, that’s not nearly as fun as knitting one! It’s the perfect pair with a mermaid blanket. 🧜‍♀️

Rolled Hem Pullover for Ken by Faun Party

Why it’s Guruvy: Knitting doll clothes is a great way to practice knitting full sized garments, and this sweater is no exception. It’s no 1967 Guruvy Formal Collection Nehru Jacket, but it’s still nice.

Barbie Hat by Hannah Filiatreault

Why it’s radical: Knitting for dolls can be a little tedious, but these cute hats are super quick and fun to knit.

Barbie Crop by Maral Mokri

Why it’s cool: Flowers, heels, and purses? What’s not to love in this fun crop top.

If you’re not going to watch the movie this weekend, I highly recommend “The Toys That Made Us: Barbie” documentary on Netflix.

It’s an eyeopening deep dive into the history of the most popular doll of all time.
