Earlier this year I set out a goal to run a marathon.
I turned 40 last December and like many people experiencing a mid-life crisis, figured I should do something crazy.
So not only am I now training for a marathon, I’m also going to *attempt* to break the world record for knitting a scarf while doing it.
On top of that I’ve also started lifting weights, because those needles will feel pretty heavy after 6 hours of continuous knitting.
And you know what?
It’s really hard.
Everything hurts.
This morning I just wanted to lay in bed and sleep.
It’s hard to knit while moving, much less with sweat dripping down my face.
I’m not telling you this to brag or get sympathy.
I’m telling you this because I’ve committed to write you something interesting about knitting every day, just like I’ve committed to myself to achieve this goal.
And I’m writing this while sitting at the cafe in front of the gym, trying to convince myself to go inside and do another workout.
It’s not easy. I don’t want to do it.
Maybe you feel the same way.
Maybe you have given up on finishing that sock because you just don’t understand the heel.
Maybe you have a sweater lying in pieces because you HATE seaming.
Or maybe…you are avoiding having a difficult conversation with a family member.
I get it.
They aren’t all “BIG” things, but they are all hard.
They present a challenge that almost guarantees a certain level of pain.
But what’s on the other side of that?
The sense of accomplishment knowing you pushed through and figured out the heel.
The feeling of pride when you wear that sweater for the first time.
Or starting to heal a relationship that’s been broken for far too long.
For me, in the long run (haha), I’m going to be healthier, fitter, able to play with my kids more…
And maybe I’ll doing something worth writing in the record books about.
But today, it’s just knowing that I kept going…
I didn’t give up.
Don’t you give up either. 😉
