Tomorrow is American Independence Day, and as an expat I find myself more patriotic than ever.
While I don’t think America is perfect (nor do I want to live there right now) I still believe in the ideals of our founding fathers.
The American spirit is something that still attracts the tired and poor, huddled masses to it’s Golden Door.
So to celebrate the United States’ not so amicable divorce from Great Britain, here are some patterns that would bring a smile to Uncle Sam’s face.

Protest Is Patriotic Beaded Scarf by NYCraft Craftivist
While it seems there’s always something to protest these days, it is engrained in the American ethos to protest those who use their power to infringe upon our unalienable rights. This nifty little shawl is a reminder that freedom is worth protecting.

Flag Pullover by Lion Brand Studio
This creative sweater perfectly captures the stars and stripes in sweater form.

Team USA 2018 Hat by Debi Hassler
This ski hat was inspired by the American Winter Olympics team sweaters, designed by Ralph Lauren. The hat combines motifs from both the men’s and women’s outfits and would look good even if it weren’t red, white, and blue.

Flag Socks: USA by Christina Rowell
Another project inspired by Olympic uniforms, these fair isle socks are about as patriotic as it gets!

A More Perfect Union by Rosemary (Romi) Hill
This shawl is another take on the American flag, this time with some beautiful garter stitch and lace motif designs.
So what do you think?
Have these patterns inspired your own inner patriot?

Vertical Stripes Stitch
This striped colorwork stitch uses stranded knitting to create the vertical bars.
While it looks like ribbing, this stitch is actually less flexible than even normal stockinette.
But knit it up in Red and White with a little blue if you’re proud to be an American!
